I have always had a fascination with pre-war Los Angeles and the stick-frame buildings of that era. Add in the mysteries of such writers as Ross MacDonald and Raymond Chandler and you have a recipe for murder and mayhem.
The building shown above isn't in LA but Laguna Beach, CA. Still it could very well be the backdrop for a murder mystery.
To top it off the name of the real-estate company in the sign on the left is 'Chandler.'
You gotta love it.

An Interesting Proposition For Photographers
Over at The Online Photographer, TOP, Mike Johnston has posted an interesting proposition for photographers. I'm not going to explain it here but if you want to know what he is suggesting then go over to the TOP site and see for yourself.
For me it's a project that I've been turning over in my head your the last couple of months. Trouble is I don't live in the Coachella Valley and that's where my special project would be. Specifically along the 111 Highway.
The photo above shows a mall in downtown Palm Springs being torn down so something just as silly can be erected. To the left of the old mall is a hotel. It stays.

Keeping It Simple The Photos Are Anything But
Limiting himself to a single lens, he says, imposes a rigorous discipline. It also has other advantages: when people see him photographing with a simple lens, they are rarely threatened and, he finds, don’t take him seriously.http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/09/04/the-lens-is-standard-the-photos-anything-but/

Work Load
Not In Speedos
For International Street Photography day I planned to spend the entire day in and around my town, Laguna Beach, CA. First stop was Main Beach with it's Boardwalk where many locals walk the dogs or or have Starbucks coffee and talk the latest gossip with other locals.
When I arrived at Main Beach there was a Junior Life Saving class on the beach and I decided to get a few shots of the group. The fellow on the right was telling me I couldn't photograph his kids. I questioned him because Main Beach is a PUBLIC beach. He stated he didn't want me taking photos of the kids in their Speedos. I almost laugh at him but instead took photos of him. What he didn't know was I was still taking photos of the kids in their Speedos.
Welcome to the 21st century.

The Getty In Black & White
The photo was taken inside the building that houses the Getty's photography collection. It seemed appropriate to convert this digital color image to black & white.
Using Adobe Lightroom 5 I first made all the adjustments to the original color image and then I remove all saturation (-100.) Bingo just the B&W image is was looking for.
This is really getting too easy.

It Takes Discipline To Use A Fixed Focal Length Lens
The zoom lens was set at 25mm. Close enough to my favorite 24mm. |

LIFE
America in Pictures: the Story of Life Magazine. from Milagro PR Atelier on Vimeo.
In the 50s LIFE magazine was the window onto the world and for a very young want-to-be photographer there was no other place I wanted to be. It didn't happen of course. To work for LIFE was the pinnacle of photography.

You Gotta Love Thom Hogan
Thom Hogan has, in the past and in the present, called the APS-C (DX) sensor used in many DSLR cameras such as the Nikon D7100 a cropped sensor. Why cropped? I'm really not sure but he does refer to the sensor used in most top of the top line DSLRs a full size sensor. Cameras like the Nikon D800 use the full, or FX, sensor.
His reference is 35mm film. The size of a 35mm image is the size of the sensors used in the top end DSLRs. This was done so that all those legacy lenes could still be used. Makes sense. But in the beginning they were very expensive to make. The reject rate of full size sensors was very high. It probably still is high in comparison to smaller sensors such as an APS-C sensor.
Now with the release of the new Leica X Vario Type 107 Thom now calls the APS-C sensor a Large Sensor Compact. Thom says the camera will cost &2,850.00. Maybe that's why he includes LARGE in the description of the sensor. Large price anyway.
Same sensor, APS-C, different definition. Strange.
Another blogger, who will remain nameless, called the APS-C sensor a reduced sensor. Maybe because he spent a small fortune on the purchase of a Nikon D800. A Nikon D800, body only, cost $2,796.95 at B&HPhotoVideo and that includes a $200.00 instant rebate. At the discounted price the body only Nikon D800 cost less than the new Leica X Vario Type 107.
I'm here to tell you the APS-C is not a cropped or reduced sensor. It's just another form factor. Very mush less expensive to manufacture then a FX sensor. That's why cameras that use the APS-C sensor cost up to a 1/3 less than FX sensor cameras.
Camera makers love the FX sensor because they can charge a premium for them. Though lately that has been a problem.

Location, Location, Location
It's just a plain stucco box house. Nothing special.
In Riverside it would probably cost $135,000. In Burbank maybe $450,000. But in Laguna Beach next the the Pacific Coast Highway this little thing could cost you $3,000,000.

I Was Ignored And I Didn't Like It
Yesterday's post was about photographer's right to photograph as they please in public. This morning I had to go to LAX here in Los Angeles. For some unexplained reason the traffic was moving right along on the 405 and what usually takes an hour-and-half on a week day only took one hour today. That gave me plenty of time to roam the Tom Bradly International terminal and photograph whatever.
There were police and security everywhere and not one even asked me what was the purpose of the photography. In short I was totally ignored. Ignored. I don't know if I was happy or upset. I mean they ignored me. You just don't do that to me.
Wait I did get asked if I was Paparazzi by a Homeland Security officer. Can you believe it? Me Paparazzi. He explained that some Hollywood star was on the way and he just wanted to know who it was. To top it off he was, probably still is, a nice guy.
Can't believe it. Me a snopper.
The world turned upside down.
