Is It Better In B&W?

John Krill: Sawdust In Black & White
I'm not really sure I like this photo. It's a converted RAW, of course. It's not the conversion but the image itself. In most cases if I don't like an image in it's original form then converting it to B&W isn't going to make a difference. Usually. Maybe not here.

Or maybe I'm having one of those days.

I will say that Lightroom 4.1 does a nice job of the conversion process. It's the first time I've ever relied on the software shortcuts to B&W. So I can't blame my indifference on the software.

Photo was taken at the Sawdust Art and Craft Festival in Laguna Beach, California. If you want to visit the festival you'll have to wait until next year. Not to worry this particular structure will be back up.

If you can't wait until next year you can visit the Sawdust early next year for their Spring run.

Sawdust Hot Glass

John Krill: Sawdust Hot GlassGetting a good photo of the glass makers at the Sawdust Festival is difficult. Light is bad at anytime of the day or night. You either shoot through thick clear plastic or the wire barrier you see in this photo. In the past I would focus on the glass maker but this time I focused on the wire barrier.

I may try the same photo again but focus on the glass maker. We will see.

Sawdust Morning

John Krill: Sawdust FestivalIt's a weekday morning and the crowds haven't arrived. Don't worry they will.

The Festival of Arts, which was yesterday's posting, generally doesn't get busy until after 5PM on the weekdays. The Sawdust Arts and Crafts Festival will start getting busy as early as Noon on weekdays and even earlier on the weekends.

The Sawdust is not an easy shoot. There is color everywhere. Nothing is aligned with anything else. And the light, it's either in your face or missing altogether. The Sawdust is a much better place to shoot when it's busy. People. Kids. Crowds. That makes for opportunities around every corner. And there are plenty of corners.

I've never photographed the Sawdust at night. Don't know why but maybe I should. Like real soon. O.K. tomorrow will do. Can't rush these thing.

Didn't edit this photo much. Just a twitch on the exposure.
